Hockey in Doha is very popular and has grown quickly in recent years thanks to the development of new, modern facilities. Doha Hockey club were kind enough to provide the information and images below.
Field hockey in Qatar took off following the Asian Games in 2006. The Qatar Hockey Federation and the Qatar Olympic Committee took over the international standard water-based Astroturf pitches located on the premises of the Al Rayyan Sports Complex. When the Qatar Hockey Federation launched the first domestic league in 2007 there were only a handful of teams. Since then hockey has been growing every year with two domestic leagues and QHF have clear ambitions of putting Qatar amongst the Top Asian Nations.
As the biggest club in Qatar, Doha Hockey Club has fielded up to 3 mixed teams in the Qatar Hockey League since 2007. The primary focus is social hockey; to enjoy the game in a social environment, improve fitness and enrich the experience of working/living in Qatar. The club is also extremely active on the international hockey tour circuit, sending teams to play at tournaments in Dubai and Singapore in recent years. Doha Hockey Club also hosted the first two editions of the Qatar 6’s international tournament with visiting teams from Qatar, UAE, Bahrain and Sudan. The objective is clear: promote field hockey in the region as a fun and social sport!
