Rugby is big in the Middle East; well certainly among the western expat community in any case. There is a Gulf League which sees teams from Qatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait all competing in regular fixtures both home and away. 2011 saw Qatar crowned champions for the first time in a few years.
Qatar’s national side (newly formed after the Arabian Gulf International side was disbanded) recently won Division 4 of the HSBC Asian 5 Nations after victories over Jordan and Lebanon.
Qatar has two rugby clubs one in Al Khor and one in Doha although the Doha Rugby Club is certainly the centre of rugby in Qatar. The rugby club is open to new members of both the playing and the socialising variety. They are located up the Salwa road just next to decoration roundabout.
